11/10 Event in Mt. View - Can Robotic Cars save the world? , by tanok

Can Robotic Cars save the world? Featuring Brad Templeton When: Tuesday, Nov. 10th, 6:30 - 9:30 pm Where: Fenwick & West, 801 California St., Mountain View, CA RSVP: http://www.jhtc.org Regular Admission: $10     Student Admission: $5     (ID required) Members Admission: Included (You can join at http://jhtc.org) JHTC on:

Agenda 6:30 - 7:00: Networking, schmoozing and eating - Bring your job postings, business cards and resumes! 7:00 - 7:10: Welcome, committee news and other group business 7:10 - 8:30: Presentation and Discussion with our featured guests 8:30 - 9:30: Informal discussions and networking with our guests and each other About the Event Prototype self-driving cars have been built by small, innovative teams thanks to a military-funded contest. But they can change the civilian world in astounding ways. This talk outlines how this technology could save millions of lives and make efficient electric (or other new technology) cars marketable and practical, resulting in major reductions in pollution and the elimination of the need to import oil. The consequences extend into the realm of social interaction, manufacturing and the very nature of cities -- perhaps the largest effect on the world that computers may have in the medium term. But the challenge is not just technological, but also political and social, and the results are not all upsides. About the Speaker Brad Templeton is currently early in the development of Caller App, the "reinvention of the telephone call itself" and chairman of the Electronic Freedom Foundation. Templeton founded and ran ClariNet Communications Corp., the first internet-based content company, then sold it to Newsedge Corporation in 1997. ClariNet publishes an online electronic newspaper delivered for live reading on subscribers machines. He's been active in the computer network community since 1979, participated in the building and growth of USENET from its earliest days and in 1987 he founded and edited rec.humor.funny, the world's most widely read computerized conference and today the world's longest running blog. He has been a software company founder, and is the author of a dozen packaged microcomputer software products. Brad also sits on the advisory boards for a few internet startups, including BitTorrent, Inc and is also on the board of the Foresight Institute (A Nanotech think-tank). Via ClariNet, He was a plaintiff in the case to get the USA's Communications Decency Act successfully overturned in the supreme court. He was born in 1960, grew up near Toronto and now lives in Silicon Valley. He holds a Bachelor of Mathematics degree from the University of Waterloo.

new techie, by bsurender

Hi all,

I've just recently joined this group which seems have quite a bit going on, so I figured I'd contribute too.

I'm just a newbie who's a Software Engineer, who's interested in new technology and was wondering if there are any software projects or ideas that I could volunteer for, as have been a volunteer growing up, but am looking to see if I can connect that with my passion for technology.

I'm more into C, C++, Java, PHP, MySQL coding, designing and developing and love robotics and embedded systems. Yep nerd to the core. Well so yep, that's it.

Feel free to email me at busybonbon@gmail.com

Thanks.

iKubu: South African opportunities, by znarf

Hi all,
I'm a serial entrepreneur and software engineer - it's good to be in Silicon Valley (virtually).  I co-founded a technology development company, iKubu, about 3 years ago.  We're currently 6 people.

What are we working on?
We've just completed the development of a micronmeter.  Its a device that uses the diffraction of light to measure the thickness of wool.  Our accuracy: within one thousandth of a millimeter...and that's using a normal 3 mega pixel CCD image sensor!  We used uClinux on a blackfin chip - so really good fun.

We've also made a strategic partnership with a Chinese hardware development & manufacturing company.  These are guys with great integrity whom we know well.

Opportunities
With the world economic downturn, I guess everyone is trying to cut costs.  Quality high-tech engineering services are obviously very expensive, and outsourcing to India and China is very rarely the right fit - mostly due to cultural and language differences.

I believe that the weakness of the South African rand puts us in an excellent position to provide leverage for a Silicon Valley based entrepreneur.  Our time difference (+- 10 hours) also creates the perfect opportunity for a 24-hour "skunk-works" type of scenario.  Have a look at the short company profile I've attached - the second page provides a sampling of the talent at iKubu.

We really want to build relationships with like minded people who we can team up with to change the world.  Are you up for it?

Live long and prosper
